3-Day Lowland Gorillas & Chimpanzee Safari

3 Days Lowland Gorillas & Nyungwe Chimps – 3 Days Lowland Gorillas & Nyungwe Chimps is a special primate tour package designed to suit your travel needs. It combines Eastern lowland gorilla trekking in Kahuzi-Biega National Park, Congo, and chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest National Park, Rwanda. Being a combined tour, it involves border crossing between two East-Central African states – Rwanda and D.R. Congo.

Highlights of the Tour

Day 1: Transfer to Bukavu

After an early breakfast at your hotel in Kigali, begin your road trip to Bukavu through the Cyangugu border post. En route, expected areas to visit include Butare National Museum, and then proceed to Nyungwe Forest National Park, home to diverse primates in Rwanda including L’Hoest monkeys, colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, vervet monkeys, chimpanzees, etc. Enjoy views of vast tea plantations, the scenic Lake Kivu, and then cross into Congo through the Cyangugu border.

Day 2: Kahuzi-Biega Gorillas

After breakfast, proceed to Kahuzi-Biega Park offices for a briefing and to be assigned a park guide for the lowland gorilla families. About 5 lowland gorilla groups have undergone full habituation in Kahuzi-Biega and are ready for trekking, including Nganwa, Mugaruka, Chimanuka, Mpungwe, and Bonnani. Start your trek to explore the Eastern Lowland gorillas in the wild, expected to last 2-5 hours. Take pictures, and afterward, return to the lodge, check out, and then transfer to Nyungwe Park in Rwanda.

Day 3: Nyungwe Chimps & Departure

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast in the morning, then transfer to Uwinka or Cyangugu reception for a briefing on guidelines for chimpanzee tracking. Nyungwe Forest Park is endowed with 13 primate species, and today, your chimp trek will expose you to more than just chimpanzees. There are also grey-cheeked mangabeys, silver monkeys, Rwenzori colobus monkeys, owl-faced monkeys, L’Hoest monkeys, baboons, etc., plus forest birds. You’ll have a maximum of one hour for a close encounter before walking back to check out of the accommodation and depart for Kigali.

End of Safari.
