4 days Rwanda gorillas & Bisoke is a combined primate encounter and volcano hiking adventure. You will enjoy a lifetime mountain gorilla trekking experience and Bisoke volcano climbing in Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. Volcanoes Park is found in the Northwestern Rwanda, and this is the oldest of the 4 parks in this landlocked country, gazetted in 1925 together with Congo’s Virunga National Park.
At Volcanoes N/Park, there are over 200 bird species, 5 Virunga volcanoes (Gahinga, Sabyinyo, Muhabura, Karisimbi- 4507m and Bisoke- 3711m), distinct vegetation zones varying with altitudinal range, variety of mammals especially mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys. This short safari in Rwanda begins and ends in Kigali.
Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Kigali city excursion + Volcanoes Park trip
Kigali city excursion will begin after breakfast at your respective hotels, and areas of interest include Kigali genocide memorial. Rwanda is famous for its historic and terrifying 1994 genocide, a deep insight about what occurred will be had today on a visit to Kigali or Gisozi genocide site. You will also visit local markets, with target to explore Kirimonko market plus nearby craft shops. From your city tour, proceed to have a leisurely lunch and after, continue to Volcanoes Park in Ruhengeri, Northwestern Rwanda and this will take you 2-3 hours to drive.
Day 2: A magical encounter with massive mountain gorillas
Rise up early for breakfast, after, proceed to Kinigi offices where allocation of gorilla families, park guides and briefing about gorilla trekking guidelines will be done by park official. Briefing begins early at 7:00am, and at 8:00am, the 2-6 hours’ trek to see gorillas starts with park guides leading you through the forest. There are 12 fully habituated groups of gorillas in Volcanoes Park, but you will visit only one today, and one hour is guaranteed for a magical encounter with mountain gorillas in the wild.
The park is also blessed with variety of other wildlife especially primates that you may come across and these include vervet monkeys, l’hoest monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, etc. After a special one hour with family of mountain gorillas, return to the lodge for relaxation, lunch and late in the evening, opt for cultural visit at Iby’Iwacu village.
Day 3: Bisoke volcano trek
Breakfast to be enjoyed early in the morning, after, connect to the Bisoke volcano base for briefing from the park official. The park guide will be allocated to your group of climbers, and you will be conquering the 3711m Bisoke Volcano. The key areas of interest at the summits include the beautiful Crater Lake and breathtaking view of the surrounding areas including Rwenzori Mountain ranges, Virunga volcanoes. Ascending to Bisoke summits may go for 3 and descending, about 2 hours although this all varies depending on climber’s speed.
Day 4: Departure
Enjoy a hefty breakfast, after, transfer back to Kigali or have an optional golden monkey trek/Dian Fossey walk before exiting Volcanoes NP. At Kigali, your driver guide will drop you off at a hotel or airport depending on your next travel arrangements.
