Detailed Itinerary.
Day 1: Transfer from Kigali to Virunga National Park.
Early in the morning, you will be welcomed by a friendly and experienced driver guide who will pick you up from your agreed pick-up point. After the initial introductions, you will be briefed on your six days in Virunga national park, and the activities you engage in starting with gorilla trekking and ending with a wonderful hike to the lava lake atop mount Nyirangongo. Eventually embark on a 4-hour transfer across the border to Goma Congo.
You will reach in the early afternoon for check-in and a scrumptious lunch with a cold glass of sweet relaxing juice. Afterwards, rewind in the hotel or comfort of your room as you wait for the evening and dinner. Have a well-deserved night’s rest and prepare for tomorrow’s exhilarating adventure of gorilla trekking.
Day 2: Mountain gorilla trekking in Virunga national park
Rise early and enjoy a heart-warming and energizing breakfast before setting out to Bukima ranger post. Here guests will be briefed about the mountain gorilla trekking activity, issued with the guidelines to ensure your safety while enjoying these amazing gentle Giants of Africa and then get onto the forest trails in search of your assigned gorilla family.
Mountain gorilla trekking in Virunga national park normally lasts about 2 to 4 hours depending on long it takes you to encounter your assigned gorilla family. After spotting your gorilla group, guests are bestowed with the privilege of spending one full hour in the presence of the mountain gorillas. After it expires you will exit the forest and head back to you for late lunch with memories of the magnificent gorillas still vivid in your mind. Don’t forget to take photos as souvenirs of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
You will spend the rest of the afternoon resting, relaxing or interacting with friends or family. You will have a luxurious dinner and retire for a night’s rest and recharge for another exciting gorilla trekking expedition.
Day 3: Second Mountain gorilla trekking
Wake up early again and partake in an early delightful breakfast before heading out with your driver guide to park headquarters for briefing and eventually trek another gorilla family. You will follow the same guidelines like no littering the park, keeping a safe distance from the gorillas, and no flash photography or bullying the gorillas as this can be fatal for the guests. Relieve another experience of meeting gorillas which is an exhilarating moment every time you get a chance to step in their presence.
After head back to your lodge for a delicious lunch waiting for you and spend the rest of the day as you wish
Day 4: Relax or visit the Senkwekwe gorilla orphanage
Your fourth day will be dedicated to rest and recharge for the Nyirangongo summit hike. However, this won’t stop you from visiting the Senkwekwe gorilla orphanage in the afternoon. This is a place for orphan baby gorillas usually saved from poachers after killing their gorilla parents. Here you will learn more about the gorillas as well as the efforts being set up to help in conserving these greatly endangered species.
You will retire to your accommodation for dinner and chill in anticipation of next day’s amazing hike.
Day 5: Mountain Nyiragongo hike
Immediately after early breakfast, you will check out of your lodge and set off to the Kibati ranger post and join other guests going for the Mount Nyiragongo hike. Engage in a briefing before setting off for the world’s largest active lava lake at the summit of Nyirangongo. This is one of the few places on earth where people are allowed to come in close proximity to an active boiling lava lake.
This experience won’t leave you the same as you watch the African sunset and fiery glow from the lake spreading across the Virunga skies. The Hike can take about 6-8 hours depending on the group’s skills and abilities. You will have two stopovers intended for resting and recharging your energy by grabbing something to eat. Spend the evening relishing the magnificent atmosphere of the summit while taking in the beautiful background of the surrounding Congo Forest, bird songs and the great company you are with.
Day 6: Hike down Mount. Nyiragongo and departure
On the last day, wake up early to catch the sunrise over Nyiragongo and Virunga national park. After partaking a simple breakfast at your camp. Begin your hiking down and reach the base in the mid-morning. You will join the Virunga security team for your transfer to Goma before continuing with your journey back to Kigali.
If time allows having a brief city tour around Kigali with visits to sites like the Kimironko market, Presidential palace museum, Kigali Genocide Memorial Grounds, etc. Head to the airport for departure flight or drop off at your hotel. This will mark the end of your exhilarating 6 Days Double Gorilla trekking & Nyiragongo hike.
