Gorilla Trekking Packing List: Essential Gear & Clothing Tips

Gorilla trekking is one of the best activities carried out in the world. Gorilla trekking, by definition, is when you are led by a ranger guide into the forest to search for gorillas. When found, tourists are given one hour to watch them engage in their daily behaviors. Gorilla trekking takes place in the national parks of three East African countries: Uganda in Bwindi and Mgahinga National Parks respectively, Rwanda in Volcanoes National Park, and the Democratic Republic of Congo in Virunga National Park.

Everyone on this planet Earth longs for gorilla trekking as an activity, and there are both essential and recommended requirements, such as clothing, which most travelers don’t bring along. This article will help you understand what to bring when traveling to gorilla destinations in Africa.

A gorilla trekking permit is an essential requirement for every tourist who wants to take part in a gorilla trekking experience. A gorilla permit is a document issued to every tourist by the Park headquarters in each gorilla destination, allowing participation in the experience without hesitation. It’s better to book your permit two or three months before your trekking day.

Rain gear like a rain jacket, a sweater, and more are important, especially in the rainy season. Even though gorillas live in tropical rainforests where it can rain anytime, these items will help protect you from rain and keep you warm during cold weather.

Hiking shoes are essential since gorilla trekking involves hiking up and down slippery terrain. Sandals are not suitable for this activity; you need high-quality, waterproof shoes to navigate muddy and slippery trails, especially during the rainy season.

Cameras are essential to capture your experience with the gorillas. Make sure your camera is well-charged and does not have a flash that could disrupt your one-hour moment with the gorillas. Flash photography is discouraged as it may provoke negative reactions from the gorillas.

Sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, and binoculars are necessary since gorilla trekking is best done during dry seasons. These items protect you from strong sunshine and help you see distant attractions and wildlife that you cannot approach closely, like birds.

Clothing for gorilla trekking should include long-sleeved shirts and long pants to protect against nettles and thorns in thick forests. Avoid shorts, as they expose your legs to potential harm from thorns and other hazards.

Energy-giving snacks are highly recommended because trekking for gorillas involves long hours of hiking. These snacks provide energy to sustain you throughout the experience.

Walking sticks will be provided at the briefing point, which is the Park headquarters, to assist with hiking. With all these essentials, your gorilla trekking experience in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo will be successful. Note that porters are available to help carry your luggage throughout the experience for a small fee.
