This 2-day Rwanda gorilla trekking safari is a short and well planned trip for travelers who want to see mountain gorillas in their natural forest home. The safari starts with arrival in Kigali and continues to the famous gorilla park in northern Rwanda. On the second day, you take part in mountain gorilla trekking and then return to Kigali for departure.
The safari takes you to Volcanoes National Park, which lies within the Virunga conservation area shared by Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park is known for mountain gorillas and other forest animals. This short safari is ideal for visitors with limited time who still want a real gorilla trekking experience.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, your driver guide will welcome you and give a short briefing about the 2-day Rwanda gorilla trekking safari. After refreshing, begin the drive to Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda’s northern region.
The drive from Kigali to the park takes about two to three hours. Along the way, pass through local towns and countryside areas. Volcanoes National Park is located in the Virunga conservation area and supports mountain gorillas and other wildlife. On arrival, drive to your lodge, check in, enjoy lunch, and relax for the rest of the day. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking & Departure
Wake up early and enjoy breakfast at the lodge. Your driver guide will then take you to the park headquarters for a briefing by a ranger guide. During the briefing, you will learn the rules for gorilla trekking and be assigned a gorilla family.
After the briefing, walk into the forest with the ranger guide to search for mountain gorillas. The trek can take between one and seven hours depending on where the gorillas are found. While trekking, you may see other primates such as colobus monkeys, red tailed monkeys, and baboons.
Once the gorillas are found, you are allowed to spend one hour with them. During this time, you can watch their behavior and take photos without flash. After the visit, trek back to the park offices and receive a certificate of participation. Return to the lodge for lunch, then drive back to Kigali for your flight home.
