Top Things to Do in Rwanda – Tourist Activities

Top things to do in Rwanda attract travelers who are interested in wildlife, history, and outdoor activities. Rwanda offers a mix of cities, historical places, and national parks that support tourism all year round. Some of the main parks include Volcanoes National Park, Akagera National Park, and Nyungwe National Park. These parks are protected areas where visitors can enjoy guided activities while respecting nature and local rules.

Gorilla trekking

Gorilla trekking is one of the top things to do in Rwanda and attracts many visitors from different parts of the world. Because only a limited number of permits are issued each day, it is advised to book early. Gorilla trekking is mainly done in Volcanoes National Park and starts very early in the morning. This allows visitors to follow the daily movements of gorillas as they search for food and care for their young ones. Gorillas behave in ways similar to humans, which makes the experience meaningful. Filming gorillas is allowed only if you have a special filming permit.

Gorilla trekking can also be done in Uganda, often referred to as the Pearl of Africa. In Uganda, this activity takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. In Rwanda, visitors are assigned to specific gorilla families to avoid crowding. An experienced guide leads each group through forest trails. The trek can last from about thirty minutes to six hours depending on the location of the gorillas. Visitors are advised to carry bottled water and snacks.

Chimpanzee trekking

Chimpanzee trekking is another popular activity in Rwanda and is mainly done in Nyungwe National Park. This activity is best during the dry season when trails are easier to walk on. Some visitors choose the wet season because prices may be lower, but muddy and slippery paths increase the risk of accidents. Chimpanzees are considered close relatives to humans and are sometimes seen walking on two feet. Visitors must follow rules and listen to guides at all times. Mimicking chimpanzee sounds or actions is not allowed because it can cause aggression.

Canopy walk

The canopy walk is one of the special things to do in Rwanda. It takes place in Nyungwe National Park and starts at the Uwinka Reception Center. Visitors receive a briefing before the walk to understand the rules. The canopy walk lasts about two hours and allows visitors to see primates, birds, animals, and reptiles from above the forest.

Game drives

Game drives are mostly done in Akagera National Park. This activity allows visitors to explore wildlife from a vehicle, making it comfortable and suitable for many people. Game drives are organized in different time slots to suit visitors, including those who arrive later in the day.
