Mountain gorillas and golden monkeys are amazing primate species endemic to the Virunga Region and Albertine Rift. With our 3 days Rwanda gorillas & golden monkeys tour, you have a lifetime opportunity to get up close & personal with both apes in their natural habitat.
This short primate adventure takes you to Volcanoes National Park, a 160 sq. km bamboo and rainforest protected area established in 1925, where both golden monkeys and mountain gorillas, along with other wildlife, reside.
Trip Details
Day 1: Enjoy Kigali City Tour & Visit Volcanoes National Park
Early breakfast at the hotel, followed by a warm welcome from our representative and a start to the Kigali city expedition. The 2-hour Kigali city tour includes a visit to Kigali or Gisozi genocide site, craft markets, museums, and others. Alternatively, after breakfast, you may drive straight to Volcanoes National Park and check in at the lodge for overnight stay.
Day 2: Volcanoes N/P Mountain Gorilla Trekking
Early breakfast is served, followed by a transfer to Kinigi to be briefed about gorilla trekking rules and regulations by Volcanoes National Park officials. Gorilla trekking begins at 8:00 am with one of the park guides. Expect to spend at least 2-6 hours in the forest searching for a family of endangered mountain gorillas assigned to your group. Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda is home to 12 gorilla families, with each group of 8 trekkers assigned to visit one family per day.
The maximum allowed time to stay with a group of these apes is strictly one hour before returning to the lodge. In the evening, you may enjoy a cultural walk with a local guide to Iby’Iwacu village.
Day 3: Golden Monkey Tracking Experience Rwanda & Departure
After a hearty breakfast, receive a briefing on guidelines for golden monkey tracking. Your park guide will lead your group into the jungles of Volcanoes National Park to track golden monkeys, expected to take 2-5 hours. Unlike mountain gorillas, golden monkeys are often spotted jumping from tree to tree, requiring keen observation during photography. After an exciting time with golden monkeys, return to the lodge for lunch and later drive back to Kigali.
