Akagera National Park was gazetted in 1934 and covers an area of 1,122 square kilometres. A 3-day Akagera National Park safari gives you a rewarding wildlife experience in eastern Rwanda. The park is known for open Savannah, lakes, and wildlife viewing that is easy to enjoy within a short time.
During this safari, you have a high chance of seeing many animals. These include lions, leopards, elephants, antelopes, buffalo, rhinos, and other plains animals. You will also see water animals such as hippos and crocodiles. The park is home to many bird species, making it a good destination for bird watching as well.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival at Kigali Airport and Transfer to Akagera National Park
On arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be welcomed by your driver guide. You will be driven to a nearby hotel for breakfast. After a short briefing about the safari, you will start your drive to Akagera National Park.
Upon entering the park, you may see animals along the way. Continue to your booked lodge for check in and late lunch. Spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing at the lodge and preparing for the next day’s activities.
Day 2: Morning Game Drive and Boat Cruise
Wake up early and enjoy a bush breakfast before your morning game drive. Early morning is the best time to see animals when they are active. You may spot lions, hyenas, leopards, elephants, buffalo, rhinos, bushbuck, and warthogs. Bird lovers can also see large birds and add more species to their bird list.
After the game drive, return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, head out for a boat cruise on Lake Ihema. During the cruise, you will see hippos, crocodiles, and water birds such as marabou storks, open-billed storks, African fish eagles, herons, and cormorants. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Transfer Back to Kigali
After breakfast, check out and drive back to Kigali. If time allows, enjoy a short city tour with an optional visit to Kigali Genocide Memorial or the Presidential Palace Museum. Later, transfer to the airport for your departure.
