This 7-day Uganda gorillas and Zanzibar tour combines two very different experiences in East Africa. The trip starts in Uganda with mountain gorilla trekking in the forest and ends on the calm beaches of Zanzibar. It is a good choice for travelers who want wildlife, nature, culture, and time to relax by the ocean.
The safari begins in Uganda at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, one of the most important conservation areas in Africa. Bwindi protects endangered mountain gorillas and many other forest species. After the gorilla experience, the journey continues to Zanzibar, an island destination known for white sand beaches, warm ocean waters, and rich Swahili culture. Zanzibar is also famous as the Spice Island because of its long history in spice farming.
This safari gives you time to explore nature in Uganda and relax on the coast of the Indian Ocean.
Day 1: Travel to the Mountain Gorilla Destination in Uganda
Your safari begins with a full-day road transfer from Entebbe or Kampala to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda. The drive takes about eight to nine hours in a 4×4 safari vehicle.
You will pass through towns such as Masaka and Mbarara, with a stop at the Equator crossing for photos and a simple water experiment showing the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Lunch will be taken in Mbarara town or at Igongo Cultural Centre.
After lunch, continue the journey through hills and rural villages to Bwindi. Arrive at your lodge in the evening, check in, enjoy dinner, and rest for the night.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Experience in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Wake up early for breakfast and drive to the park offices for a briefing on gorilla trekking rules and safety guidelines. Park rangers will assign you a gorilla family and a professional guide.
The trek starts at 8:00 am and can take between two and six hours, depending on where the gorillas are located. You will walk through forest trails while your guide explains the plants and wildlife around you.
Once you find the gorillas, you will spend one full hour observing them as they feed, rest, and interact. This is the main highlight of the safari. After the trek, enjoy lunch in the forest or back at the park offices.
In the afternoon, visit the Batwa or Bakiga community to learn about local culture and traditions. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Fly from Southwestern Uganda to Zanzibar
After an early breakfast, drive to Kihihi or Kisoro airstrip for a domestic flight to Entebbe International Airport. From Entebbe, connect to an international flight to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar.
On arrival in Zanzibar, meet your local driver and transfer to your beach hotel. Spend the evening relaxing at the hotel, enjoying the sea breeze and dinner.
Day 4: Zanzibar Beach Relaxation and Stone Town Visit
After breakfast, enjoy a relaxed morning at the beach. You may swim, walk along the shore, or simply rest at the hotel.
Later in the day, visit Stone Town, the historic center of Zanzibar City. During the guided tour, visit the old slave market, Old Fort, House of Wonders, and narrow streets filled with history and local life.
Return to the hotel in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 5: Spice Tour and Beach Time in Zanzibar
Start the day with breakfast, then head out for a spice tour. Zanzibar is well known for spice farming, and during the visit, you will see and learn about spices such as cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla.
After the spice tour, return to your hotel for lunch and enjoy the rest of the day at the beach. Optional activities include snorkeling, diving, or a boat ride along the coast.
Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 6: Jozani Forest Visit or Full Beach Day
After breakfast, you may choose to visit Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park. This park is home to the Zanzibar red colobus monkey and other forest animals. A guided walk through the forest allows you to see wildlife and learn about mangrove ecosystems.
If you prefer, you can spend the whole day relaxing at the beach. Enjoy swimming, sunbathing, or walking along the shore. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 7: Departure from Zanzibar
On the final day, enjoy breakfast and check out of your hotel. If time allows, do some shopping in Stone Town for souvenirs and local crafts.
