3-Day Rwanda Gorillas & Golden Monkeys Tour

Mountain gorillas and golden monkeys are special primates found only in the Virunga Region and the Albertine Rift. With the 3 Days Rwanda Gorillas and Golden Monkeys Tour, you get the chance to see both species in their natural home. This short primate safari is ideal for travelers who want close encounters with rare wildlife in Rwanda.

The tour takes place in Volcanoes National Park, a protected area covering about 160 square kilometres. The park was established in 1925 and is made up of bamboo zones and rainforest. It is home to mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, and other forest animals. The tour combines wildlife viewing with cultural visits and guided walks.

Trip Details

Day 1: Kigali City Tour and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Start the day with an early breakfast at your hotel. Meet your safari representative and begin a short city tour in Kigali. The two hour tour includes a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, local craft markets, and museums. These visits help you understand Rwanda’s history and culture.

After the city tour, drive north to Volcanoes National Park. If you prefer, you may skip the city tour and drive straight to the park after breakfast. On arrival, check in at your lodge, enjoy dinner, and stay overnight.

Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

After an early breakfast, transfer to Kinigi for a briefing by park officials on gorilla trekking rules. Gorilla trekking starts at 8:00 am with a park guide. You will walk through the forest for about two to six hours while searching for a mountain gorilla family assigned to your group.

Volcanoes National Park has twelve habituated gorilla families. Each family is visited by a group of up to eight trekkers per day. Once the gorillas are found, you are allowed to spend one hour observing them before returning to the lodge. In the evening, you may visit Iby Iwacu Cultural Village for a guided cultural walk.

Day 3: Golden Monkey Tracking and Departure

After breakfast, attend a briefing on golden monkey tracking. A park guide will lead you into the forest to look for golden monkeys. The activity usually lasts between two and five hours. Golden monkeys move quickly between trees, so careful attention is needed during photography.

After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch. Later, drive back to Kigali for your departure. This marks the end of the 3 Days Rwanda Gorillas and Golden Monkeys Tour.
