3-Day Nyungwe Forest Chimpanzee Trekking Safari

The 3 Days Nyungwe Forest Tour takes you to one of Africa’s oldest tropical forests and an important primate destination in Rwanda. Nyungwe Forest National Park is well known for chimpanzee tracking and the canopy walk experience. This safari also includes a cultural visit to the King’s Palace in Butare, giving you insight into Rwanda’s history and traditions.

Nyungwe Forest National Park is home to 13 primate species, including L’Hoest monkeys, large groups of colobus monkeys, and a strong population of chimpanzees. The forest also supports many bird species, plant species, and other forest animals. This makes the park an excellent choice for travelers interested in nature, primates, and forest walks.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

After breakfast, meet your safari leader for a short briefing about the 3-day Nyungwe Forest tour. Depart at 8:00 am from Kigali and drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park in southern Rwanda. The drive takes about five to six hours in a 4×4 safari vehicle.

Along the way, stop in Butare to visit the Ethnographic Museum Rwanda and the King’s Palace Museum. After lunch, continue the journey to Nyungwe Forest. On arrival, check in at your lodge, enjoy dinner, and stay overnight.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking and Canopy Walk

After an early breakfast, drive to the Uwinka Reception Centre for a briefing on chimpanzee trekking rules. You will be assigned a park guide who will lead you into the forest to search for chimpanzees and other primates. The trek usually lasts between two and four hours, including one hour spent observing the chimpanzees.

Return for lunch at the lodge. At 2:00 pm, take part in the canopy walk. This walk takes place on a suspended bridge about 200 meters long above the forest floor. During the walk, you may see birds, monkeys, and forest views from above. After the activity, return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Return to Kigali and Departure

Enjoy breakfast at the lodge, then check out and meet your driver guide. Drive back to Kigali. If time allows, you may visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial or proceed directly to Kigali International Airport for your departure.

This marks the end of the 3 Days Nyungwe Forest Tour.
