The 3 Days Congo Lowland Gorillas Safari is a short and rewarding trip for travelers who want to see eastern lowland gorillas in Africa. This safari starts in Kigali and takes you to Kahuzi-Biega National Park near Bukavu in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. After the gorilla trek, you return to Kigali for your departure flight. This tour is suitable for visitors with limited time who still want a real primate experience.
Kahuzi-Biega National Park is famous for protecting eastern lowland gorillas, also known as Grauer’s gorillas. These gorillas are larger than mountain gorillas and live in lowland forest areas. Only a few gorilla families are open for tourism, and visits are well controlled to protect the animals.
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Bukavu
On arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be met by your driver guide. After a short briefing about the 3 Days Congo Lowland Gorillas Safari, begin the road journey to Bukavu in eastern Congo. The drive takes about 6 to 7 hours.
Along the way, pass through rural areas of Rwanda and enjoy views of hills, villages, and farmland. Stop at selected points to stretch and enjoy a picnic lunch. Continue the journey to Bukavu and check in at your booked lodge near Kahuzi-Biega National Park. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.
Day 2: Eastern Lowland Gorilla Trekking
After breakfast at the lodge, drive to the Kahuzi-Biega National Park headquarters. Present your permits and attend a briefing by park rangers about lowland gorilla trekking rules. You will then be assigned a ranger guide and enter the forest to search for a gorilla family.
The trek can last between 2 and 8 hours, depending on where the gorillas are located. Once you find them, you are allowed to spend one hour observing their behavior and taking photos. After the trek, return to the park office to receive your trekking certificate. Drive back to the lodge for dinner and rest.
Day 3: Return to Kigali and Departure
Enjoy breakfast at the lodge, then check out and begin the drive back to Kigali. Continue to Kigali International Airport for your flight back home. End of safari.
