D.R. Congo is one of the world’s richest countries in minerals and natural attractions, yet it remains one of the least explored destinations in Africa. This 3-day Bonobo Chimpanzee Trekking in the D.R. Congo offers a rare chance to visit the Congo Basin and meet bonobo chimpanzees in their natural environment. Bonobos are found only in the Democratic Republic of Congo and are closely related to common chimpanzees, with a similar body size and social behavior.
This short safari focuses on conservation, wildlife learning, and guided forest walks. It is ideal for travelers who want a unique primate experience close to the capital city.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival and Visit to Lola ya Bonobo Sanctuary
After breakfast at your hotel in Kinshasa, you will begin your transfer to Lola ya Bonobo Sanctuary. This sanctuary is the only place in the world dedicated fully to the protection and care of bonobo chimpanzees. The drive from Kinshasa to the sanctuary is about 125 km and passes through rural communities and countryside views.
On arrival, you will learn about the work done to rescue and protect bonobos. Many of these animals were saved from illegal wildlife trade. In the evening, enjoy a guided nature walk around the sanctuary area before settling in for dinner and an overnight stay at your lodge or hotel.
Day 2: Bonobo Chimpanzee Trekking in D.R. Congo
Start the day with tea or coffee, then head out for a guided bonobo chimpanzee trekking experience. With the help of experienced guides, you will walk through the forest and spend about 3 to 4 hours observing bonobos. You will watch how they feed, move, and interact in groups. After the trek, return to your accommodation for rest, dinner, and overnight stay.
Day 3: Second Bonobo Visit and Departure
After an early breakfast, enjoy a second visit to see the bonobos. This gives you more time to observe their daily life and behavior. Later, check out and transfer back to Kinshasa for your onward journey. This marks the end of your 3-day Bonobo Chimpanzee Trekking in the D.R. Congo.
