Detailed Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Meet, Greet, and Transfer to Mgahinga National Park
Our driver guide will meet and greet you at the pre-arranged pickup location. After a briefing and a refreshing glass of juice, embark on the 9 to 10-hour drive to Uganda’s southwestern region. Travel on a paved road surrounded by lush hills, passing through bustling towns where locals go about their daily activities, including Ankole herdsmen with their iconic long-horned cattle. Enjoy a lunch and refreshment break along the way. Check in at the lodge, conclude the day with dinner, and relax.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking and Batwa Pygmies
Begin your day with an early breakfast at the lodge, gearing up for an unforgettable experience. Register and undergo document verification and a pre-tracking briefing at the park headquarters. Collect your tracking equipment, meet your ranger guide and porters.
In a group of no more than 8 guests, track one of the famous gorilla families in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Your ranger guides will explain trekking regulations before leading you into the forest to begin the search. Follow clues like broken tree branches, leaves, and dung from their last known location to where they might currently be.
Gorilla trekking is conducted on foot and typically lasts between one to six hours, including an additional hour for photography and interaction with the guides. Witnessing mothers caring for their babies, silverbacks displaying their dominance, and juveniles playing is a truly joyful experience.
During the trek, you’ll also learn about various tree species, forest creatures, and birds. Return to the lodge for lunch and refreshments after the day’s activities. In the evening, enjoy a cultural performance by the Batwa pygmies, former forest dwellers known for their vibrant songs and stories. Conclude the day with dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 3: Golden Monkey Trekking and Departure
Have breakfast at the lodge before heading to the park’s administrative point for a pre-trek briefing on golden monkeys. Your ranger guide will provide insights into these unique primates and guidelines for the trek. Golden monkeys are known for their lively behavior and golden fur, making them challenging subjects for photography as they swiftly move from branch to branch.
Tracking golden monkeys takes approximately 2 to 6 hours, plus an additional hour for photography and interaction with the guides. Due to their timid nature, golden monkeys tend to evade human contact. After this experience, have lunch before continuing your journey to Kigali, Rwanda.
End of Safari.
