The 4-day Lowland Gorilla Trekking Safari is a rewarding primate experience that takes you to Kahuzi-Biega National Park in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. This park is the main home of eastern lowland gorillas, which are different from mountain gorillas in size, movement, and behavior. Trekking these lowland gorillas gives you a deep forest experience and lasting memories.
This safari starts and ends in Kigali. From Kigali International Airport, you will travel to Congo for lowland gorilla trekking and guided nature walks along the Lwiro trail. The journey also allows you to see local life and forest landscapes along the way.
Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to the Lodge
Arrive at Kigali International Airport where you will be warmly welcomed by a company representative. After a short orientation about the safari, you will be transferred to your hotel or lodge in Kigali. The rest of the day is for rest, dinner, and an overnight stay, depending on your arrival time.
Day 2: Transfer to Kahuzi-Biega National Park in D.R. Congo
After breakfast, begin your road trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo through the Ruzizi border at Cyangugu. Along the way, enjoy lunch and visit the Nyanza Palace and the Ethnographic Museum to learn about Rwanda’s history and culture. Continue the drive to Bukavu town and check in at your lodge near Kahuzi-Biega National Park for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Lowland Gorilla Trekking and Lwiro Nature Walk
Wake up early for breakfast, then transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing by ranger guides. Begin the lowland gorilla trek, which can take about five to six hours depending on the gorillas’ location. Once found, you will spend one full hour observing their daily life and behavior.
After trekking, return to the park station for a picnic lunch. In the evening, enjoy a guided nature walk along the Lwiro trail. During this walk, you may see waterfalls, red-tailed monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and birds such as the Rwenzori turaco. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Transfer Back to Kigali. End of Tour
After breakfast, check out from the lodge and drive back to Kigali. Enjoy views of local villages and countryside along the way. Later, transfer to the airport for your departure flight, marking the end of your 4-day Lowland Gorilla Trekking Safari.
