4 Days Virunga Gorillas and Nyiragongo Hike is one of the top short safaris in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This tour allows visitors to take part in mountain gorilla trekking in Virunga National Park, located along the borders of Uganda and Rwanda. Virunga National Park is one of the most important gorilla trekking destinations in Africa and attracts many travelers who wish to see endangered mountain gorillas in the wild.
This safari also includes a hike to the summit of Mount Nyiragongo, one of the most active volcanoes in the world. You will hike to the top and spend one night at the summit, where you can see the lava lake. The safari starts and ends in Kigali, making it easy to combine with travel in Rwanda.
Day 1: Transfer from Kigali to D.R. Congo
Your driver guide will pick you up from Kigali International Airport or your hotel in Kigali. After a short briefing about the 4 days Virunga gorillas and Nyiragongo hike, start the drive toward Congo. Enjoy lunch in Gisenyi town while viewing Lake Kivu and its calm shores.
Continue to the Congo border and cross into Goma. At the Grand Barrier post, complete border clearance and confirm your gorilla permits. Proceed to your booked lodge near Virunga National Park for dinner and overnight rest.
Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Virunga National Park
After breakfast, pack your lunch and drive to the park headquarters for a briefing by ranger guides. They will explain the rules to follow during mountain gorilla trekking. Porters are available to help carry bags if needed.
Enter the forest with your guide to search for a gorilla family. The trek can last between 1 and 6 hours depending on the gorillas’ location. During the walk, you may see birds, primates, and other forest animals. Once you meet the gorillas, you will spend one full hour observing them as they feed, rest, and interact. After the trek, return to the starting point and drive back to the lodge.
Day 3: Nyiragongo Volcano Hike and Overnight at the Summit
Wake up early and have breakfast. By 8:00 am, arrive at Kibati ranger post for a briefing. Start the hike to the summit of Mount Nyiragongo, which takes about 5 to 6 hours. Along the trail, enjoy views of forest areas and Lake Kivu in the distance.
Reach the summit and settle into the shelters. Spend the night at the top while watching the glowing lava lake and taking photos.
Day 4: Descend and Departure
After breakfast at the summit, begin the descent back to Kibati station. Meet your driver guide and drive back to Kigali for airport drop off or overnight stay, marking the end of your 4 Days Virunga Gorillas and Nyiragongo Hike safari.
