This 6-day tour offers a combination of guided lowland gorilla trekking and Nyiragongo hike in the D.R. Congo. Your complete gorilla and mountaineering adventure will begin with visit to Kahuzi-Biega National Park for lowland gorilla tracking and end it with Mount Nyiragongo hike in the Virunga National Park.
Kahuzi-Biega National Park is a tropical forest protected located west of Bukavu, Southern Kivu province in the D.R. Congo. It is largely dominated by 2 extinct volcanoes- Kahuzi (3308m) and Biega (2790m). Established in 1970, Kahuzi-Biega N/Park was primarily founded to offer refuge to the Grauer’s gorillas. Its land area measures up to 6000sq.kms and it is where you will enjoy lowland gorilla trekking experience.
Nyiragongo hike to be conducted on Mount Nyiragongo, Virunga National Park. This is also a renowned home to mountain gorillas. Mt. Nyiragongo is among the 8 volcanoes that make up Africa’s Virunga Massifs/mountain ranges. Nyiragongo volcano is an active volcano, rising at altitude of 3470m.

Day 1: Kigali – Bukavu
A warm welcome into the land of a thousand hills, and after, transfer to Bukavu, a road trip most likely to take you up to 7 hours. The long journey to Bukavu covers lunch break en-route and later, proceed to check in at the pre-booked lodge or hotel.
Day 2: Kahuzi-Biega NP Lowland gorilla trekking adventure
Early breakfast at the lodge, after, transfer to the briefing point to get to learn about the lowland gorilla trekking rules. The Kahuzi-Biega N. Park lowland gorilla trekking lasts for 2-6 hours inclusive of a magical encounter and photography upon locating the lowland gorillas. It is an unforgettable experience tracking and finally get up close with these unique apes in their natural habitat. When you get back, have a relaxed evening at your accommodation.
Day 3: Travel to Virunga Park
Depart for Virunga National Park, a mountain gorilla safari park in the D. R. Congo and this includes crossing from Bukavu to Goma. At Bukavu port, sail on Lake Kivu where you will again catch a speed boat connecting to Goma. From Goma, board a 4×4 vehicle to be transferred to clearing point at Virunga National Park. Final journey will be at the lodge near Mount Nyiragongo.
Day 4: Nyiragongo hike Virunga N/Park
Hike to the summits of Nyiragongo volcano begin early with briefing at Kibati ranger post. Meet the officials and you will be assigned to a guide to lead you on a 5 to 6 hours’ trek to the glowing summits of Mount Nyiragongo (3470m). This volcano is one of the world’s powerful volcanoes and it has had its recent eruption on 22 May 2021.Expect breathtaking view of the glowing Lava Lake at the summits.
Day 5: Descend back to Kibati ranger post
Descending back to Kibati ranger post starts after breakfast. Today, you will have moderate walk taking you from 3-4 hours to reach Kibati from you will meet your driver guide for transfer you to Rwanda. Arrive at Kigali early, and undertake a short city tour inclusive of visit to Kigali/Gisozi genocide centre.
Day 6: Depart Kigali
Breakfast enjoyed at leisure and after, check out of your luxurious accommodation in Kigali. Do some shopping shortly and transfer to the airport for departure or to your next safari destination.
