Mount Gahinga is one of the eight volcanoes that form the Virunga mountain range. These volcanoes stretch across Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Mount Gahinga sits on the border between Uganda and Rwanda and is part of the famous Virunga massif.
The name Gahinga comes from a local Rufumbira word meaning “pile of stones.” This name refers to the stone heaps found in nearby farmlands, which were cleared from volcanic soils to make space for farming. These stone piles are still common in the area today and gave the mountain its name.
Mount Gahinga rises to an elevation of 3,473 meters above sea level. It lies between Mount Muhabura and Mount Sabyinyo. The slopes of Mount Gahinga are covered with thick forests that support endangered mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, and other wildlife species. These forests are protected within Mgahinga Gorilla National Park on the Ugandan side and Volcanoes National Park on the Rwandan side.
At the summit of Mount Gahinga, there is a wide volcanic caldera measuring about 180 meters across. This caldera is covered with vegetation and shows clear signs of the mountain’s volcanic past. The vegetation on Mount Gahinga mainly includes Afromontane forest and bamboo zones. The bamboo areas are especially important because they provide food for golden monkeys and mountain gorillas.
Mount Gahinga is believed to be one of the youngest volcanoes in the Virunga range, estimated to be about 100 years old. Although it is classified as dormant, there are no records of recent eruptions.
Hiking Mount Gahinga is a popular activity for visitors interested in volcano trekking. The hike passes through bamboo forests and higher altitude vegetation zones. Along the trail, hikers may see signs of wildlife and enjoy views of the surrounding Virunga volcanoes.
