A visa is an official document that allows a traveler to enter, stay in, and leave a country for a fixed period of time. To travel to Democratic Republic of Congo, different types of visas are required depending on the reason for travel. Below are the main visa types and requirements needed when applying for a Congo visa.
There are several types of visas issued for entry into Congo.
Tourist Visa
A tourist visa is issued at any accredited Congolese consulate. This visa is valid for three months and allows multiple entries for non US citizens. United States citizens traveling to Congo for tourism are issued a tourist visa valid for six months with multiple entries. This visa is suitable for travelers visiting Congo for holidays, sightseeing, or leisure travel.
Official or Diplomatic Visa
Official and diplomatic visas are issued to holders of diplomatic passports, official passports, and United Nations laissez passer documents. These visas apply to diplomats and employees from institutions such as the United Nations, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, U.S State Department, and ministries of foreign affairs from countries like Canada and Mexico. Diplomats accredited to embassies in the United States, Canada, and Mexico also qualify for this visa type.
Business Visa
A business visa is issued to travelers visiting Congo for business activities such as investments, professional meetings, or feasibility studies. For non US citizens, the business visa is valid for 30 days and allows multiple entries. If the stay exceeds 30 days, the visa must be extended at the nearest immigration office in Congo. US citizens traveling for business are granted a business visa valid for 180 days with multiple entries.
Congo Visa Requirements
Applicants must provide an invitation letter or hotel reservation. The invitation letter should include the name and address of the host in Congo, the purpose of the visit, and must be addressed to the Congolese Embassy. The letter should be valid for three months. Travelers visiting with children or guardians must show proof of parenthood.
Visa fees for Congo are 200 US dollars. Payment is accepted only in cash or money order. Money orders must be made payable to the Embassy of the Republic of Congo. Visa fees are non refundable once the application is submitted.
A copy of an airline ticket showing arrival and departure dates is required.
Applicants for a business visa must submit a business letter stating the purpose of travel, business contact details in Congo, and address it to the Embassy of the Democratic Republic of Congo. No business visa is issued without this letter.
Applicants must submit completed visa application forms at least two weeks before travel. A valid passport with at least six months validity and two colored passport size photos are required.
Congo visas can also be issued at selected border posts within the country.
