Dian Fossey Grave Trekking in Rwanda

Dian Fossey grave trekking in Rwanda is a meaningful activity that connects visitors to conservation history and nature. Dian Fossey was a well known primatologist and conservationist who dedicated her life to protecting mountain gorillas. From a young age, she loved animals and later focused her work on primates. Her strong fight against poaching made a lasting impact on gorilla protection in Central Africa.

Dian Fossey carried out her research for about eighteen years in the Virunga Mountains. She started her work in 1967 after arriving from the Democratic Republic of Congo and later set up a research center between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke. This area later became known as the Karisoke Research Center. Sadly, she was murdered in 1985, but her conservation work did not end. Her legacy continues through protection efforts and research that still support gorilla survival today.

Her grave is located inside Volcanoes National Park, close to her research site. She was buried near her favorite gorilla named Digit, which makes the trek very special for many visitors. The hike allows trekkers to learn about her life, her struggles, and her achievements while walking through gorilla habitat.

The Dian Fossey grave trek starts at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi. Visitors arrive early in the morning, usually around 7:00 am, for registration and briefing. After the ranger explains the rules, the trek normally starts around 8:00 am. The hike takes about one to three hours depending on fitness and trail conditions.

The trail passes through forest zones at elevations between 2,900 and 3,000 meters. Because of the altitude and terrain, visitors are advised to be physically fit or prepare with light exercise before the trek. It is important to carry water, snacks, a first aid kit, sunglasses, binoculars, and a camera. Walking sticks are provided, and porters are available to help carry bags.

A permit and valid travel documents are required for this trek. The activity is popular in the dry season when trails are easier to walk on. Dian Fossey grave trekking offers education, reflection, and a close look at Rwanda’s conservation story.
