Lake Ihema is one of the most important water bodies in eastern Rwanda. It lies close to the border with Tanzania and sits within the marshlands connected to the Kagera River. The lake drains through a short channel and is ranked as the largest lake in Rwanda, covering about 100 square kilometers. Lake Ihema stands at an altitude of about 1,292 meters above sea level and plays a major role in supporting wildlife in the area.
Lake Ihema is surrounded by wide seasonal and permanent papyrus swamps. These swamps are very important habitats for animals and birds found within the park. The lake provides drinking water for large mammals, birds, and other wildlife, especially during the dry season. Although the lake supports many living species, fish populations are limited compared to other lakes.
One of the main threats to Lake Ihema is water hyacinth. This plant spreads quickly and affects water quality. Water hyacinth reduces oxygen levels in the water and changes temperature and nutrient balance. These changes lead to a decline in biodiversity and also affect nearby communities that depend on the lake for their daily needs.
Lake Ihema is located in Kayonza District in the southern section of Akagera National Park. Akagera National Park contains many lakes, but Lake Ihema is the largest and most visited. The lake is well known for hosting large numbers of hippos and crocodiles. These animals are often seen resting in the water or near the shores.
The lake is also rich in birdlife. Visitors can see many bird species such as the shoebill, papyrus gonolek, ibises, jacanas, herons, plovers, sandpipers, malachite kingfishers, hawks, and many others. Because of this, Lake Ihema is one of the best bird watching areas in Rwanda.
The best way to explore Lake Ihema is through a guided boat safari. Boat trips allow visitors to move quietly on the water and observe wildlife from a safe distance. A trained guide leads each boat safari and points out animals and birds using binoculars. Visitors are required to follow safety rules and wear life jackets at all times during the boat ride.
Boat safaris on Lake Ihema are organized by Akagera National Park. These trips usually take place early in the morning around 8 am or in the afternoon around 2 pm. These times allow visitors to see animals coming to drink water along the lake shores. Hippos, crocodiles, antelopes, and birds are commonly seen during these hours.
Fishing in Lake Ihema was restricted for many years. In 1934, a royal decree limited activities to support the creation and management of the national park. Today, controlled fishing is allowed under park management policies. However, Lake Ihema remains a protected lake because it lies within Akagera National Park.
During a Lake Ihema visit, tourists can also enjoy game drives in the park. These drives offer chances to see land animals and more bird species in the morning or late afternoon.
Lake Ihema remains a key natural feature of Rwanda and continues to support wildlife, tourism, and conservation efforts.
