Mount Mikeno is one of the volcanoes that make up the Virunga massif, which stretches across the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and Rwanda. Mount Mikeno is located entirely in Congo and is the second highest mountain in the Virunga range. It rises to an elevation of 4,437 meters above sea level.
The name Mikeno comes from a local word meaning “poor.” Local communities gave it this name because of its steep and rough slopes, which do not support human settlement. Although people do not live on its slopes, the mountain provides an important habitat for endangered mountain gorillas and other wildlife found in Virunga National Park.
In 1926, Carl Akeley, a well known nature photographer and conservationist, attempted to climb Mount Mikeno. Sadly, he died during the expedition and was buried at Kabara campsite near the mountain. Later, unknown people disturbed his grave, believing he may have been buried with gold. This event added a sad chapter to the history of Mount Mikeno.
In 1932, Ganshoff Van Der Meesch W.J successfully climbed to the summit of Mount Mikeno and became the first recorded person to reach the top. About 28 years later, Pierre Peron, Lewis Nudge, and Tjeenkwilink also managed to climb the mountain.
Hiking Mount Mikeno
Mount Mikeno is considered the hardest mountain to climb among all the Virunga volcanoes. According to experienced climbers, the hike is very demanding due to steep terrain and thick forest. However, reaching the summit rewards climbers with wide views of the surrounding mountains and parts of the East African Rift Valley.
Climbing Mount Mikeno is recommended only for experienced hikers. Proper mountain gear is required, including waterproof hiking shoes, warm and long sleeved clothing, insect repellent, sunscreen, and rain protection. Visitors can also hire hiking equipment from Mikeno Lodge if needed. Porters are available at the briefing point to help carry luggage for a reasonable fee. The best time to hike Mount Mikeno is during the dry season when trails are in better condition.
Mountain Gorilla Trekking
Mountain gorilla trekking is one of the main activities in Virunga National Park and should not be missed. Mountain gorillas share about 98 percent of their DNA with humans and each gorilla has a unique nose print.
Gorilla trekking permits in Virunga National Park cost about 400 US dollars per person per trek. Visitors can also visit the Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage, the only mountain gorilla orphanage in the world, while exploring the park.
