Mabamba Swamp shoebill watching is one of the best birding experiences in Uganda. Mabamba Swamp is found west of Entebbe, along the shores of Lake Victoria. This wetland is famous for hosting the shoebill, one of the most wanted birds by bird lovers visiting Uganda. Shoebills mainly feed on lungfish, and where these birds are present, fish tend to hide. In the past, some fishermen saw shoebills as a problem and hunted them, which caused a big drop in their numbers.
To protect the shoebills and the wetland, the government of Uganda declared Mabamba Swamp a Ramsar site in 2006. This decision helped protect the birds and their habitat. With the growth of tourism, local fishermen stopped hunting shoebills. Instead, many now rent out their boats to visitors and work as local guides. This change has helped improve their income and daily lives.
There are about twelve resident shoebills in Mabamba Swamp. The swamp can be reached from Kampala or Entebbe. The easiest route is through Nakiwogo landing site in Entebbe. From there, visitors take a short ferry ride of about ten minutes to Kasenyi. After the crossing, it is a drive of about twenty minutes to Mabamba. Along the way, you pass farms and open fields where many common garden birds can be seen.
Mabamba Swamp covers about 2,424 hectares. It is made up of thick papyrus, water lilies, and other wetland plants. The swamp supports over 300 bird species. During the months of October to March, large numbers of migratory birds from Europe and Asia arrive along the northern shores of Lake Victoria. These birds later return to their home countries.
Shoebill watching in Mabamba is done using a motorized wooden boat. The boat moves slowly through narrow water paths in the swamp. The best time to see shoebills is early in the morning, around 7:00 am. At this time, the swamp is quiet, and the birds are active. Shoebills hunt by standing still for long periods, watching the water closely. When they see movement, they strike quickly with their strong bill.
Besides shoebills, visitors may see other birds such as African fish eagle, purple swamp hen, African jacana, African marsh harrier, African pygmy goose, black crake, black heron, black crowned night heron, black crowned waxbill, and African green pigeon.
