3-Day Nyiragongo Volcano Hike in Virunga National Park

Nyiragongo volcano is one of the most famous natural attractions in the Virunga region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Located inside Virunga National Park, Nyiragongo is known for its strong volcanic activity and repeated eruptions, with the latest major eruption recorded in 2021. At the top of the volcano sits a large lava lake that remains active and visible from the summit, making this short 3-day Nyiragongo volcano tour a rare and memorable experience.

Virunga National Park is a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its rich wildlife and natural features. Established in 1925, it is Africa’s oldest national park. The park protects mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, elephants, buffaloes, okapis, and more than 700 bird species. This tour focuses on hiking to the summit of Mount Nyiragongo, one of the most active volcanoes in the world.

Day 1: Kigali City Tour and Drive to D.R. Congo

Meet your trip leader at your hotel in Kigali for a short briefing about the 3-day Nyiragongo volcano tour. Begin with a Kigali city tour lasting about two hours. Visit the Gisozi Genocide Memorial Center, the Presidential Palace Museum, Kimironko Market, and local craft shops.

After lunch, depart Kigali and drive toward the Goma border. Along the way, enjoy views of the countryside and Lake Kivu. After clearing immigration formalities at the border, continue to your lodge or hotel in Goma for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Briefing at Kibati and Hike to Nyiragongo Summit

After breakfast, drive to Kibati patrol post for a briefing by park officials. You will be assigned a ranger guide who will lead you during the hike. The walk to the summit of Nyiragongo takes about 4 to 6 hours, depending on pace and weather conditions.

Upon reaching the summit at 3,470 meters, you will see the active lava lake from a safe viewing area. You will spend the evening and night at the summit, listening to explanations from your guide about the volcano and its history. Overnight accommodation is provided at the summit shelters.

Day 3: Descend from Nyiragongo and Return to Kigali

Wake up early and have breakfast at the summit before starting the descent back to Kibati. The walk down is shorter and takes about 3 to 4 hours. At the base, meet your driver guide and begin the drive back to Kigali.

Upon arrival in Kigali, you will be dropped off at your hotel or at the airport for your onward journey. End of tour.
