This 4-day Bwindi and Lake Bunyonyi tour explores two of Uganda’s top safari places in the southwest of the country. The tour focuses on Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which holds most of the world’s mountain gorillas, and Lake Bunyonyi, a calm lake area known for rest and nature activities. The journey starts and ends in Kampala or Entebbe International Airport.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has four gorilla trekking sectors. The most known and oldest is the Buhoma sector. Lake Bunyonyi is a quiet place with over 29 small islands, each linked to local stories and history. During this tour, you will enjoy gorilla trekking, canoeing, swimming, short walks, and local culture. Lodges, meals, and transport are chosen with comfort in mind.
Day 1: Pickup and Drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Your safari begins with a pickup and briefing by the driver guide. After the briefing, start the drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda. The journey takes about 9 to 10 hours, including a lunch and short rest stop along the way.
The drive passes through countryside areas and busy trading centers. The road is in good condition and offers changing views throughout the journey. Arrive near evening time and proceed to your lodge for check in. Enjoy dinner and rest for the night as you prepare for gorilla trekking the next day.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Experience
Start the day early with breakfast at the lodge. Transfer to the park headquarters for registration and a briefing by park rangers. During the briefing, you will learn about gorilla behavior, safety rules, and how to behave during the trek. You will then be assigned a gorilla family.
The trek into the forest can last from one to eight hours, depending on where the gorillas are found and your walking pace. Along the way, you may see other primates and forest birds. Once the gorillas are found, you will spend one hour with them, taking photos and observing how they live.
After the trek, return for lunch and then head back to the lodge. In the evening, relax at the lodge or take part in a cultural visit with the Batwa community if time allows. Dinner and overnight stay follow.
Day 3: Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi and Canoe Ride
After breakfast, leave Bwindi and drive for about one hour to Lake Bunyonyi. This lake is one of the deepest in Africa and is known for calm waters and fresh air. On arrival, have lunch and enjoy free time at the lodge.
In the afternoon, take a canoe ride to one of the islands on the lake, such as Punishment Island, which has a strong historical background. Other activities include swimming, photography, or simple walks around the lodge area. Dinner and overnight stay at the lake.
Day 4: Bird-watching and Departure
Wake up early to bird sounds around the lake. Join a local guide for a short bird-watching walk where you can learn about many bird species found in the area. After breakfast, begin the drive back to Kampala or Entebbe International Airport for your departure. End of safari.
