The 5-day Bwindi and Kibale Forest Safari is a rewarding Uganda wildlife and primate tour that combines chimpanzee trekking and mountain gorilla trekking in two of the country’s most important national parks. Uganda is known as the Pearl of Africa, and this safari focuses on its rich primate life, forest landscapes, and cultural experiences.
During this safari, you will visit Kibale National Park, often called the primate capital of the world, for chimpanzee trekking and a visit to the crater lakes in the Kasenda and Ndali area. You will then travel to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which is home to about half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. The safari ends in Entebbe for your departure flight.
Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Kibale National Park
Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, your driver guide will meet you and give a short briefing about the safari. After the briefing, you will begin the drive to Kibale National Park in western Uganda. The journey takes about six to seven hours and passes through towns, farms, and green countryside.
Kibale National Park is famous for its primates, especially chimpanzees. On arrival, check in at your lodge near the park. Enjoy dinner and settle in for an overnight stay as you prepare for the activities the next day.
Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking and Crater Lakes Exploration
After breakfast, drive to the Kanyanchu Visitor Center for a briefing on chimpanzee trekking. A ranger guide will explain the rules and then lead you into the forest to search for chimpanzees. The trek can take between two and six hours depending on where the chimpanzees are located.
Once you find them, you will spend one hour watching them feed, move through the trees, and interact with each other. After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch and rest.
In the afternoon, meet a local guide from the Isunga community for a crater lakes visit. This activity lasts about two to three hours and allows you to see small lakes, learn about fishing, and hear stories about local life. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
After breakfast, check out from the lodge and begin the journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda. The drive takes about six to seven hours with a lunch stop along the way. You will pass through parts of Queen Elizabeth National Park and continue toward the Buhoma area of Bwindi.
Arrive at your lodge near Bwindi in the evening. Check in, enjoy dinner, and rest as you prepare for gorilla trekking the next day.
Day 4: Gorilla Trekking and Batwa Cultural Tour
Start the day early with breakfast, then drive to the park headquarters for a gorilla trekking briefing. Park officials will explain the trekking rules and assign you a gorilla family and ranger guide. The trek can take between one and eight hours depending on the gorillas’ movements.
When you find the gorillas, you will spend one hour observing their behavior and taking photos. After the trek, return to the park offices to receive your trekking certificate and then go back to the lodge for lunch.
In the evening, take part in a cultural visit with the Batwa community. Learn about their traditional forest life through dance, music, and storytelling. Dinner and overnight stay are at the lodge.
Day 5: Return to Entebbe Airport
After breakfast, check out from the lodge and drive back to Kampala and Entebbe. Along the way, stop at the equator for photos and a short break. Continue to Entebbe International Airport for your departure flight, marking the end of the 5-day Bwindi and Kibale Forest Safari.
