Mount Karisimbi is a stratovolcano found in Volcanoes National Park in northern Rwanda. It is one of the eight Virunga Volcanoes and rises to 4,507 meters above sea level. This makes Mount Karisimbi the highest volcano in the Virunga Range and the 11th tallest mountain in Africa. Because of its height and location, Mount Karisimbi is one of the most important hiking destinations in Rwanda.

History of Mount Karisimbi

On February 27, 1908, an expedition led by Egon Von Kirschstein experienced a tragic event. Twenty porters died after being caught in snow and hailstorms while descending from the Branca crater. Since then, safer trails have been created, making the hike more manageable today.
