Kibumba Sector in Virunga National Park

The Kibumba sector of Virunga National Park offers some of the most activities within the park. This sector is found in the southern part of Virunga National Park and stretches toward Lake Kivu. It is known for its montane rainforests and volcanic landscapes. Kibumba sector is where you find Mount Nyamuragira, Mount Mikeno, and the famous Mount Nyiragongo.

Because of its location, the Kibumba sector is an important starting point for many park activities. It is also close to park headquarters, making it easy for visitors to access briefings, guides, and accommodation.

Mountain Gorilla Trekking

Mountain gorilla trekking is the most popular activity in the Kibumba sector of Virunga National Park. Each mountain gorilla family is visited by a maximum of eight visitors per day. Gorilla trekking permits must be booked in advance to avoid missing this experience.

Treks begin early in the morning after a briefing by park rangers. Visitors must be in good physical condition since gorillas live in high rainforest areas with steep trails. It is important to carry proper trekking gear such as waterproof hiking boots, raincoats, jackets, long sleeved clothes, insect repellent, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.

Gorilla trekking in the Kibumba sector can be done throughout the year. The best time is during the dry season when roads are easier to use and forest trails are less muddy.

Hiking Volcanoes

The Kibumba sector is home to three Virunga volcanoes. These are Mount Nyamuragira, Mount Mikeno, and Mount Nyiragongo. Mount Nyiragongo erupted in May 2021 and is currently not open for hiking. However, visitors can still hike Mount Nyamuragira and Mount Mikeno, each offering long hikes through forested slopes.

Guided Nature Walks

Guided nature walks are also available in the Kibumba sector. Rangers lead visitors along established trails where they learn about plants, animals, and birds. With luck, visitors may see mountain gorillas or other wildlife during the walk.

Birding

Bird watching is another activity in the Kibumba sector. From the many bird species recorded in Virunga National Park, visitors may see birds such as Ruwenzori batis, Congo peafowl, Shelley’s crimson wing, striped breasted tit, and dusky crimson wing.

Visitors staying in this sector can sleep at Kibumba Tented Camp, which is located close to major activity areas.
