The Lulimbi sector, also called the central sector of Virunga National Park, is located along the eastern border of the park near Uganda. It stretches toward areas close to Lake Edward. This sector is special because the savannah landscape of Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda extends into this part of Virunga.
In the Lulimbi sector, visitors may see animals such as elephants, antelopes, and hippos along the Ishasha River. Tree climbing lions are also sometimes seen in this area, making it popular for wildlife viewing. Guided game drives and nature walks are the best ways to explore this sector and learn about the plants and animals found here.
The Lulimbi sector is also important for bird watching. Many bird species live in this area, making it a good place for bird lovers. The main place to stay in this sector is Lulimbi Tented Camp, which provides access to activities in the surrounding area.
Gorilla trekking is one of the main activities in Virunga National Park and should not be missed. Visitors must book their gorilla permits at least three months in advance to avoid inconvenience. Gorilla trekking permits in Virunga National Park cost 400 US dollars per person per trek.
Virunga National Park is one of the most well known protected areas in Africa. The park supports over 700 bird species, 196 mammal species, 78 amphibian species, 109 reptile species, and more than 2,077 plant species. Virunga National Park has many natural habitats, including montane forests, wetlands, bamboo zones, Savannah plains, lowland forests, and areas linked to the Rwenzori ranges.
Virunga National Park is also famous for hosting two of the most active volcanoes in Africa. One of these is Mount Nyiragongo, which erupted in May 2021. This volcano is not fully studied due to long periods of political unrest in the region. Mount Nyiragongo is known for having very fast flowing lava compared to other volcanoes around the world.
For easier access and management, Virunga National Park is divided into four main sectors. Each sector offers different landscapes and activities. One of the most interesting areas is the Lulimbi sector.
