Bukima Sector – Gorilla Trekking in Virunga National Park

The Bukima sector of Virunga National Park, also known as the Eastern Sector, is one of the main areas where endangered mountain gorillas are found in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This sector is very important for gorilla trekking, and most tourists who plan to trek mountain gorillas in Virunga start their experience from the Bukima Patrol Post, which is located inside this sector.

Gorilla trekking in the Bukima sector starts early in the morning. Tourists gather at the Bukima ranger post for a briefing by park rangers. During this briefing, visitors are informed about safety rules and what to expect during the trek. Only eight tourists are allowed to visit one gorilla family per day. This rule helps protect the gorillas and reduces stress on the animals. The trek itself can take several hours depending on where the gorilla family is located and the walking speed of the trekkers.

Once the gorilla family is found, visitors are allowed to spend one hour with them. During this time, tourists can watch the gorillas as they move, feed, and interact with each other. Visitors can also take photos for memories. All tourists must strictly follow the dos and don’ts while in the presence of mountain gorillas to keep both people and animals safe.

Another activity in the Bukima sector is a visit to the Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage. This is the only orphanage for mountain gorillas in the world. It was set up in 2010 to rescue young gorillas that were saved from illegal bush meat trade or wildlife trafficking. Tourists staying at Mikeno Lodge can visit the orphanage for free.

Visitors can also take part in chimpanzee habituation with rangers and researchers in the Mahura Forest while staying in the Bukima sector. For accommodation, tourists can stay at Bukima Tented Camp or Mikeno Lodge, both of which offer easy access to activities in this part of Virunga National Park.
