Lake Mutanda Uganda – Location, Activities & Accommodation

Lake Mutanda is found in Kisoro District in southwestern Uganda. The lake covers an area of about twenty nine square kilometers and has a maximum depth of about fifty six meters. It sits at an altitude of around one thousand eight hundred meters above sea level. Lake Mutanda lies at the foothills of the Virunga Mountains, with clear views of Mount Muhabura, Mount Sabyinyo, and Mount Gahinga. These mountains help shape the climate and scenery around the lake.

Lake Mutanda has about fifteen small islands that are covered with natural vegetation. These islands support birds and other small animals. The largest island is Mutanda Island, which takes its name from the lake. It is home to the Abageresa clan. The people living on this island practice farming and grow crops such as beans, peas, and sugarcane. These crops help support their daily life together with fishing. Near the lake are other islands that are often linked to local history and community stories. Guides explain these stories to visitors during island visits.

One island is commonly called Python Island because pythons are known to live there. Visitors are advised to keep a safe distance and follow the guide’s instructions at all times. Local guides help visitors move safely and can also help translate when visitors wish to talk with local people.

Lake Mutanda supports wildlife, though in smaller numbers compared to nearby lakes. Bird species seen around the lake include pin tailed whydah, great cormorant, sunbirds, and pied kingfisher. The cooler climate around the lake affects the number of birds found here. Mammals seen around the lake include the African clawless otter, which feeds on fish and other small animals. Reptiles such as pythons and chameleons are also present, while frogs can often be heard near the water.

Many activities can be done around Lake Mutanda. Gorilla trekking is a main attraction because the lake is close to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. After gorilla trekking, visitors often relax with a boat cruise on the lake. These cruises allow guests to see islands, birds, and shoreline life. Other activities include island walks, mountain biking, and cultural visits.

Accommodation around Lake Mutanda includes Mutanda Lake Resort, Chameleon Hill Forest Lodge, Lake Mutanda Campsite, Muga Eco Lodge, Binga Villa, and Karungo Camp. These places offer comfort and easy access to the lake and nearby parks.

Lake Mutanda offers calm surroundings and nature based activities. It is a good place to relax after gorilla trekking and enjoy time close to water and mountains.
