Mount Biega is a dormant volcano found inside Kahuzi-Biega National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Mount Biega rises to an elevation of 2,790 meters above sea level. It is the second highest peak in the park after Mount Kahuzi. The park’s name comes from a combination of these two mountains, Mount Kahuzi and Mount Biega.
Mount Biega is popular with visitors interested in hiking and nature walks. The mountain can be climbed within about six hours, including both ascent and descent. Three main hiking trails are used on Mount Biega. These are the Mbayo Trail, the Tshiabati Waterfalls Trail, and the Murais Musisi Walking Trail. Each trail offers a different experience, allowing hikers to enjoy forest scenery, wildlife sounds, and views of the surrounding park.
The best time to visit Mount Biega is during the dry months of January and February. During this period, the weather is better for hiking and trails are easier to use. There is no permanent accommodation inside the park apart from a basic campsite. Visitors planning to hike Mount Biega should carry their own camping gear if they plan to stay overnight.
Kahuzi-Biega National Park
Kahuzi-Biega National Park is one of the most important conservation areas in Central Africa. It is home to the largest remaining population of eastern lowland gorillas in the world. Because of its importance to wildlife and forest protection, UNESCO listed the park as a World Heritage Site in 1980.
Lowland Gorilla Trekking
Lowland gorilla trekking is the main activity in Kahuzi-Biega National Park. There are three habituated eastern lowland gorilla families that tourists can visit. Only eight visitors are allowed to visit each gorilla family per day. Gorilla trekking starts early in the morning with a briefing from park rangers.
Once the gorilla group is found, visitors are allowed to spend one hour observing the gorillas and taking photos while learning about their behavior. The best time for lowland gorilla trekking is during the dry season, when park roads and forest trails are in better condition. However, rain can still occur at any time in Congo.
Visitors should come prepared with waterproof hiking boots, rain jackets, warm long sleeved clothes, sunscreen, a hat, and insect repellent. Lowland gorilla trekking permits must be booked in advance before visiting the park.
