Mount Muhabura Volcano & Gorilla Trekking Guide

Mount Muhabura, also known as Mount Muhavura, is one of the famous volcanoes in the Virunga Mountains. The mountain lies on the border between Uganda and Rwanda, with the wider Virunga range stretching into the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Mount Muhabura is the third highest volcano in the Virunga range after Mount Karisimbi and Mount Mikeno. It rises to an elevation of 4,127 meters above sea level. The name Muhabura comes from a local word meaning “guide.” The mountain can be seen from many areas in both Uganda and Rwanda, and travelers in the past used it to help them know their direction and location.

The exact time Mount Muhabura last erupted is not clearly known, but scientists believe the eruption happened during the Holocene period. Today, the mountain is inactive and safe for hiking with proper guidance.

Gorilla Trekking Near Mount Muhabura

Gorilla trekking is one of the most popular activities for visitors in the Virunga region. The forested slopes of Mount Muhabura are home to endangered mountain gorillas. Visitors hiking the mountain can also plan for gorilla trekking as part of their trip.

Mountain gorilla trekking is done in both Uganda and Rwanda. In Uganda, a gorilla trekking permit costs 700 US dollars per person. In Rwanda, the permit costs 1,500 US dollars per person. Gorilla permits should always be booked in advance, especially during busy travel months, to avoid missing the experience.

Gorilla trekking can be physically demanding. Visitors are advised to be in good physical condition and carry proper trekking gear. Recommended items include waterproof hiking shoes, garden gloves, rain jackets, warm clothing, insect repellent, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
