Uganda Visa Requirements for Tourists & Travelers

Before you visit Uganda, it is important to understand the Uganda visa requirements. Some travelers come from visa exempt countries and do not need a visa to enter Uganda. However, if your country is not visa exempt, you must apply for a Ugandan visa before or upon arrival. The information below explains how the Uganda visa works and how you can get one easily.

A visa is an official document or permission that allows a person to enter, stay in, or leave a country for a specific period. Most countries require visitors who are not citizens to have a visa. Some countries allow visa free entry for citizens of certain nations because of diplomatic agreements.

Uganda is one of the most visited countries in Africa due to its many tourist activities. These include mountain gorilla trekking, chimpanzee trekking, wildlife viewing, bird watching, mountain hiking, cultural tours, and national park safaris. Because of this growing tourism, Uganda has made its visa process simple for most travelers.

You can get a Ugandan visa in three main ways. The first option is getting a visa on arrival at Entebbe International Airport or at any official land border. The second option is applying through Ugandan diplomatic missions or embassies in your home country or nearby countries. The third and most common option is applying online through the Uganda immigration portal.

A single entry Uganda visa costs 50 USD. If you plan to enter Uganda more than once, you can apply for a multiple entry visa. Multiple entry visas are issued for 12 months, 24 months, or 36 months depending on your travel needs. The length of stay granted usually depends on how long you intend to stay in the country.

There are different types of Ugandan visas available. A transit visa is for travelers passing through Uganda to another country. This visa is valid for only two days after arrival and allows one entry only. A tourist visa is valid for up to 90 days and is issued to visitors who come to Uganda for tourism or leisure travel.

Another popular option is the East African Tourist Visa. This visa allows travel between Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda using one visa. You must apply for it from the country you visit first. Once you leave these three countries, the visa becomes invalid. The East African Tourist Visa costs 100 USD and is valid for 90 days.

To get a Uganda visa, there are several requirements you must meet. All travelers must have a valid passport from their home country. The passport should be valid for at least three months after the date of arrival in Uganda. Business travelers must provide an invitation letter from their business partners. Visitors going to see friends or family may also be asked to show invitation letters.

You must fill in the visa application form correctly and completely. A recent passport size photo with a plain background is required. Travelers must also provide return airline tickets and proof that they have enough funds to support themselves while in Uganda.

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for entry into Uganda. No traveler will be allowed to enter without this certificate. Additional vaccination requirements may be announced during disease outbreaks.

Only Somali citizens are required to have biometric passports. Without one, entry into Uganda will not be allowed, even if all other documents are available.
