The 4-day Virunga Gorillas and Lake Kivu Boat Safari is one of the best short Congo safari experiences for travelers who want to combine mountain gorilla trekking with relaxation on the water. This safari focuses on Virunga National Park, a large protected area in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and ends with a calm boat ride on Lake Kivu.
Virunga National Park covers about 7,800 square kilometers and is Africa’s oldest national park, established in 1925. The park is home to eight fully habituated mountain gorilla families that are available for trekking. It also shelters other wildlife such as elephants, hippos, warthogs, okapis, and many bird species. More than 200 mammal species and over 700 bird species live within the park.
Lake Kivu lies along the border between Rwanda and Congo, within the Albertine Rift Valley. It is one of the few African Great Lakes where swimming is considered safe. The lake covers about 2,700 square kilometers and reaches a depth of about 480 meters. It is known for its calm waters and islands.

Day 2: Kigali City Tour and Drive to Virunga National Park

Once the gorillas are found, you will spend one hour observing their daily behavior and taking photos. Only eight visitors are allowed to track one gorilla group per day. After the trek, return to the lodge to rest. Later, cross to Gisenyi town in Rwanda and check in at your hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
